It is a really handy feature. The main way I use it is to combine percentage rules with set pixel rules. There are so many times I would prefer to percentages to define width, margin, padding, etc so that as the website sizes down it looks good at all possible sizes. However, consistency is king when designing websites. It can be really difficult to have consistent space between columns and sections when using percentages. As a result of this I find myself setting a width of 100% or a width of 50% and using a padding with a percentage as well to get a consistent space while still reaping the benefits of percentages. The problem is, this doesn't work all the time. For example, on a recent project I wanted two elements to float next to each other. Both elements had a background image, so if I did the width: 50%; padding: 0 5% method the background images would but right up against each other.  What I really wanted was to determine a set pixel space in between the two elements, but still be able to use a percentage. - [cache](https://www.steckinsights.com/cache-16/): What is WCAG Compliance? - [cache](https://www.steckinsights.com/cache-15/): What is WCAG Compliance? - [cache](https://www.steckinsights.com/cache-14/): What is WCAG Compliance? - [cache](https://www.steckinsights.com/cache-13/): What is WCAG Compliance? - [cache](https://www.steckinsights.com/cache-12/): What is WCAG Compliance? - [cache](https://www.steckinsights.com/cache-11/): What is WCAG Compliance? - [cache](https://www.steckinsights.com/cache-10/): What is WCAG Compliance? - [cache](https://www.steckinsights.com/cache-9/): What is WCAG Compliance? - [cache](https://www.steckinsights.com/cache-8/): What is WCAG Compliance? - [cache](https://www.steckinsights.com/cache-7/): What is WCAG Compliance? - [cache](https://www.steckinsights.com/cache-6/): What is WCAG Compliance? - [cache](https://www.steckinsights.com/cache-5/): What is WCAG Compliance? - [cache](https://www.steckinsights.com/cache-4/): What is WCAG Compliance? - [cache](https://www.steckinsights.com/cache-3/): What is WCAG Compliance? - [cache](https://www.steckinsights.com/cache-2/): What is WCAG Compliance? - [cache](https://www.steckinsights.com/cache/): What is WCAG Compliance? - [How to Use and Style CSS Columns](https://www.steckinsights.com/how-to-use-and-style-css-columns/): CSS Columns are a great way to visually break up text or lists into columns. - [Simple WordPress GDPR Compliance Instructions](https://www.steckinsights.com/simple-wordpress-gdpr-compliance-instructions/): GDPR is a massive data privacy law and you have some work to do to get in compliance. - [Center A List While Floating The List Items With CSS](https://www.steckinsights.com/center-a-list-while-floating-the-list-items-with-css/): The Problem:I want to display a list horizontally, but I want the entire list to be centered on my page. - [Configuring Coldfusion 2018 with Apache on Mac OS X Mojave](https://www.steckinsights.com/configuring-coldfusion-2018-with-apache-on-mac-os-x-mojave/): There have been some bugs in Mac OS X 10.14 (Mojave) that made it impossible to use Coldfusion outside of it's root. Services like Wix, The Grid, Divi and Squarespace have become a much more viable option for individuals and even companies. Over the 5 years that I have been building custom websites, my friends and family will periodically reach out with concern after seeing a new advertisement for an easy, beautiful, do it yourself website builder. At first I thought I would need to start moving into a new industry, however, I have now arrived at the conclusion that there is still a really large gap between custom websites and DIY website builders. It feels like most of the time during my initial conversation with a potential client they mention how cheaply they can get started with a website on whatever the most popular drag and drop builder is at the time. My answer is always the same. The purpose of the blog post is to answer the question, "Is a custom website right for me?". - [Google’s Mobile-First Indexing & Website Health Check](https://www.steckinsights.com/googles-mobile-first-indexing/): We all know that Google has the ability to see an immense amount of data from its 1.17 billion users. I have had many clients want to link to different sections of their long scrolling page from the nav bar. This is not hard, it is simply accomplished by linking to an id of the element you want to scroll to. What was proving to be more difficult was figuring out how to style the active menu item differently than the rest so the end user could tell where they are at on these huge pages. Normally you would add a class of "current-list-item" to the nav link that is linked to the url you are on and style that with css however you wanted. - [SEO Sudden Ranking Drop Caused by WP_Cron Redirect Errors](https://www.steckinsights.com/seo-ranking-drop-redirect-errors/): The only thing I could find was a spike, between 3 and 5 hundred redirect errors on the sites. Which was very confusing because I hadn't set up any redirects for any of our sites recently. So I looked into it; the issue had to do with wp_cron events. I immediately turned my wp_cron events completely off to try to get Google to replace my rankings as quick as possible. After turning it off and telling Google Search Console to validate my fixes, I went to work trying to figure out what had caused the sudden spike in wp_cron redirecting almost all my pages to wp_cron versions of the same page. - [How to Practically Optimize your Page Speed](https://www.steckinsights.com/practically-optimize-page-speed/): If you are like the majority of people viewing webpages, I only have your attention for 15 seconds. So, here is my elevator pitch. Do you want the people coming into contact with your web presence to stare at a buffering page during the precious 15 seconds you have to win them over? Or, do you want to deliver your content quickly to take advantage of the small amount of time your viewers will engage with your content? The answer to this question is easy, everyone who takes their web presence seriously wants their website to be beautiful, functional and fast. Everyone knows how frustrating it can be to stare into a soulless screen waiting for a website to finish buffering. In this post I am going to walk you through some practical steps you can take to optimize your page speed. You want to add a border to the bottom of an element but you don't want it to be under 100% of the element. You just want it to be under a bit of it. My first thought was maybe CSS would let you establish a width for border-bottom... No such luck. You can go in to the HTML and add another element below the element you want to have the border-bottom and give it a background that is the color you want the border to be and then set the width and height, which is what I have done for years. - [Don’t GoDaddy](https://www.steckinsights.com/dont-godaddy/): We try to be very flexible with our customers choices and do our best to give the absolute most helpful and insightful advice on all subjects. It seemed that on Safari's mobile browser, images were often not appearing or they were being swapped out for other images. For example, sometimes the social media icons would become a staff member's face, or vice versa. Other times, a company logo would be where a section title would be, or an icon would be where the company logo was supposed to go. Typically, a WordPress post allows you to create a hand-crafted "excerpt" which will often show up as a sort-of article teaser to give the reader an idea of what the article is all about. Some templates allow for post excerpts as well as "page excerpts" which, in the past, would just pull the first 150 or so characters from your article... often leaving some weird text-breaks and not really giving a good description of what the page is all about. - [Important Website Considerations for Artists: Part 1 of 3](https://www.steckinsights.com/important-website-considerations-for-artists-part-1-of-3/): There is no law that requires you to have a website, no one is forcing you to use a cell phone and no one mandates that you drive a car. - [LinkedIn Hacked: Account Information Compromised](https://www.steckinsights.com/linkedin-hacked-account-information-compromised/): Reports have come in that LinkedIn may have been hacked.
